With IPL 2026 reaching its final stage, focus is slowly shifting towards Team India’s upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan. The series will be important because it could mark the beginning of India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup. But the biggest talking point right now is whether senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will continue to be part of India’s long-term plans in the format.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India is expected to announce the Test and ODI squads on May 19. While there may not be many surprises in the Test squad, the ODI team for the Afghanistan series could see some big decisions. The selectors, along with head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are likely to discuss the future of a few senior players before finalising the squad.
According to reports, Rohit Sharma’s place in the ODI side is under serious discussion. The main concern is fitness. Rohit suffered a hamstring injury during IPL 2026 and missed several matches for Mumbai Indians. Even after returning, he mostly played only as an Impact Player. A source quoted by Times of India reportedly said, “The management doesn’t want to compromise on fitness standards.” That could make things difficult for the 39-year-old opener.
Rohit had performed well at the beginning of the IPL season and had even produced a winning innings for his side when they faced Kolkata Knight Riders. The injury however disrupted his rhythm and it came into question whether or not he would be able to manage ODI cricket for another two years ahead. He is already done with Test and T20 International cricket.
Virat Continues to Impress with Peak Fitness Levels
On the contrary, things seem to be looking up for the other Indian cricketer, Virat Kohli. Virat seems to be in great form during the IPL 2026. As per reports, Virat’s fitness levels are considered one of the best in the team. Thus, the selectors can rest assured about his fitness levels. “Virat’s fitness levels are still among the best in the team,” said a source. This means that Kohli will continue to play an important role in the ODIs.
As far as all-rounder players like Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja are concerned, selectors will have to take some hard decisions in their cases. According to reports, Hardik has been struggling with fitness issues lately. He also skipped some IPL matches due to his back spasms. For Ravindra Jadeja, there seems to be young blood challenging his place. Considering the fact that World Cup 2027 is some years away, India can find its path by playing in Afghanistan.
