He replaces Mahela Jayawardene, who parted ways with the franchise last weekend. Pollard served as the team’s batting coach for the last four IPL seasons after retiring from the league ahead of the 2023 season.

Pollard has been associated with Mumbai Indians since 2010. He was part of all five of their IPL title wins in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. He also helped the team win two Champions League T20 titles in 2011 and 2013. In 189 IPL matches, he scored 3,412 runs at a strike rate of 147.32 and took 69 wickets.

Pollard said he was honoured to take on the role. He added that Mumbai Indians had played a major part in his career and that he understood the team’s values and responsibilities. He also said he wanted to work with the players and support staff, develop young talent and help the franchise win more titles.

Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani welcomed the appointment and said Pollard had become an important part of the franchise over the past 16 years. She praised his contribution as a player and coach and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the team. Pollard has also represented MI’s sister franchises in the MLC, ILT20 and SA20. He played for MI New York and Trinbago Knight Riders in 2026 and was signed by Joburg Super Kings for the 2027 SA20 season. Pollard’s first major task will be to finalise Mumbai Indians’ player retentions ahead of the IPL 2027 auction, scheduled to take place in Goa in December. This will be his first head coaching role in franchise cricket.
