Against Bangladesh in the recent two-match Test series, Mohammad Rizwan accumulated 181 runs across both games. No other Pakistan batter scored more runs on the tour. The tally also included a 94-run knock, which was Rizwan’s first 90-plus score since August 2024.
Rizwan overcomes fitness concerns
Before Pakistan announced the squad for the West Indies tour, reports suggested that Rizwan and Saud Shakeel might be left out due to fitness concerns. While Saud still has that sword hanging over his head, Rizwan avoided that fate after showing positive progress in a fitness test following the conclusion of the red-ball training camp.
“He had some fitness issues at the start of the camp, but worked hard on his rehabilitation and showed great improvement. He was outstanding, and he is looking fit now,” Pakistan red-ball head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed said while speaking about Rizwan.
Sarfaraz backs Rizwan to deliver
Rizwan’s Test average dipped from 44 to 36-odd last year. While an average of 36 is by no means poor, by Rizwan’s standards, and given what Pakistan’s middle order needs, it was somewhat of a concern.
“Form can go up and down when you play regularly, but he is a quality player who has been representing Pakistan consistently. It is a challenging series, and Rizwan understands what is required. I hope his performance benefits the team,” he added.
Hope pinned on Babar’s return
Pakistan will begin their two-Test series against the West Indies on July 25. It will also be Babar Azam’s first assignment since returning as Test captain. Babar will take over Pakistan at one of the most difficult periods in their recent history. But Sarfaraz remains hopeful, and for now, that is all Pakistan can do.
“First of all, I would like to congratulate Babar Azam on being reappointed as captain. I believe he has a wealth of experience, having already led Pakistan. We all have great hope that things will turn out well under his leadership,” he concluded.
