Ellyse Perry doesn’t want to wrap her head around the fact that some of her fellow players have watched her play growing up. One of them is Fatima Sana, Pakistan’s skipper and Birmingham Phoenix’s, the Hundred team that Perry leads, wildcard deal for this season.
On her first away tour of Australia, a shy Fatima Sana asked Australian players to introduce her to Perry. A few years on from that, Perry has nothing but praise for the young and passionate Fatima Sana, who partnered with her captain and steered her side over the line om their final game of the season. Perry and Sana stitched together a 66-run partnership while rescuing the side from losing their fourth consecutive game.
“Yeah, she’s a world-class player,” said Perry about Fatima Sana.
“It’s been wonderful to play with her this season. The first time I’ve got a chance to do that in franchise cricket. She hits a clean ball with the bat. She’s obviously a handy bowler up front for us as well. So it’s been great to see her come along, and hopefully she’s really enjoyed it, executing when you need to under pressure.”
Phoenix fall short despite the effort
Despite the individual highs, Phoenix haven’t had the season they wanted. While they did not end at the bottom of the table, they would be disappointed at themselves for failing to overcome their flaws. But Perry believes her teammates have played their part well.
“This season, it just hasn’t worked out for us. But as I said, the effort’s been there the whole time and no one’s put their head down.”
