Veteran pacer Chaminda Vaas believes Shubman Gill will be the key player for India in the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. The conditions are expected to test the Indian batters, particularly with the pitch likely to offer assistance to spinners as the match progresses. Gill will have the added responsibility of leading the team from the front and setting the tone in the first Test. India have struggled against spin in recent times, especially on turning tracks, and Sri Lanka could pose another stern challenge in those conditions. With the series opener in Galle likely to demand patience and solid technique, Gill’s batting could play a major role in India’s hopes of starting the series on a strong note.
Vaas believes Gill’s temperament and ability to build long innings could make him India’s biggest weapon in Galle. The former Sri Lanka pacer has closely watched the Indian captain’s batting and feels his consistency and composure make him particularly difficult to dismiss once he settles in.
“Shubman Gill will be the key, especially in the first Test in Galle. He has the temperament. Once he gets going, it is very difficult to get him out. I’ve seen him bat, and he is a brilliant player. He is the best I have seen in India over the last few years. Shubman Gill has been performing really well,” the Sri Lankan legend told RevSportz.

Shubman has made a strong start as India’s Test captain, scoring 1,076 runs in nine matches and 15 innings. He has maintained an outstanding average of 82.76, underlining his consistency at the top. Gill has already smashed six centuries and one fifty during his captaincy, highlighting his ability to lead from the front with the bat.
“India a powerhouse of talent”
India have entered a transition phase in Test cricket following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, with a new generation now expected to take on bigger responsibilities. Despite the absence of two of their biggest names, Vaas believes India still have enough quality in their ranks. The former Sri Lanka pacer feels the youngsters coming through are ready to step up and make the most of their opportunities.
“Even though Virat and Rohit are not there, India still have a powerhouse of talent. They have so many good, upcoming cricketers, eager to perform and waiting for their opportunities,” Vaas added.
