England have named Stephen Fleming as their new Test head coach. He replaces Brendon McCullum, who stepped down after England’s 2-1 home Test series defeat to New Zealand last month. McCullum, however, will remain in charge of England’s white-ball teams. Fleming, on the other hand, joins after a successful tenure with Super Kings franchise.
He guided CSK to five IPL championships and many more titles across global T20 leagues. Before coaching, he enjoyed a successful playing career and captained New Zealand in 111 Tests, making him the country’s most successful Test captain.
“I am looking forward to working with the players and bedding in the gains made by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes. Of course, the ambition is always to win now. But equally, it’s about ensuring the team is well placed for the medium and long-term future. There is a lot of young talent in and around the team and our aim is to help them fulfil their potential as world-class cricketers,” Fleming said.
Joe Root has returned as England’s Test captain after being reappointed to the role. He had stepped down as skipper in 2022, with Ben Stokes taking over the leadership. However, following the nightclub controversy during the first Test against New Zealand, England cricket saw major changes.

Stokes eventually retired from international cricket, leading to Root’s return as the Test captain. Ideally, Harry Brook, the designated vice-captain of the side, was expected to take over after Stokes.
The team management and selectors feel that the young batter needs more time to grow into the role. As a result, Joe Root has been given the captaincy once again. He is expected to lead the team for now, while Harry Brook is being prepared to take over as England’s full-time Test captain in the future.
“It is a great honour and privilege to be asked to be England Men’s Test captain again. The Test captaincy is a difficult but hugely rewarding job and, after enjoying a brief taste of it again working with [Brendon] McCullum last month, I am excited to lead this next generation of players forward,” Root said.
“The opportunity to do that alongside Stephen is also a huge motivator. He has proved over a long period of time that he is an exceptional leader with a great knowledge of the game, and I am looking forward to working with him and helping to build a winning environment,” he added.
