Suryakumar Yadav Backs Shreyas Iyer as India T20I Captain, Congratulates Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Suryakumar Yadav showed great sportsmanship after being removed as India’s T20I captain and dropped from the squad. Instead of reacting negatively, he wished Team India all the best. While he did not specifically mention his replacement, Shreyas Iyer, he shared good wishes for the team and his former teammates, showing his support despite the disappointment. But there’s no bad blood between him and Shreyas.

Suryakumar Backs Shreyas, Congratulates Vaibhav on India Call-Up

They have shared the Mumbai dressing room in domestic cricket with each other for over a decade now. It wasn’t as if Shreyas forced him out, since he wasn’t even in the team during the T20 World Cup 2026. In fact, it was Suryakumar’s silent willow that made the selectors look elsewhere. Later in the day, Suryakumar, who’s the captain of the Triumphs Knights in the T20 Mumbai League 2026, stated that he’s elated for Shreyas and proud that it’s a Mumbai cricketer who has replaced him as India’s T20I captain.

“Very happy for Shreyas Iyer. We played a lot of cricket for Mumbai and India together. Most importantly, there are 3 back-to-back T20I captains for India from Mumbai now, and it is a very proud moment for all of us at Mumbai Cricket,” Suryakumar said after winning the toss against Mumbai Falcons at the Wankhede Stadium.

Suryakumar also congratulated young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on receiving his first India call-up. At just 15 years old, Vaibhav is set to become India’s youngest-ever international debutant, breaking the 37-year-old record held by Sachin Tendulkar. Suryakumar’s message highlighted his support for the next generation of Indian cricket stars.

“You have earned it all and how. Super excited to follow your journey,” Suryakumar wrote.
