‘There was more to explore’: Farhan Akhtar reveals the real reason he switched from directing to acting amid 'Don 3' fallout with Ranveer Singh
Farhan Akhtar has revealed that early acting experiences in ‘The Fakir of Venice’ and ‘Rock On!’ pushed him to explore performance beyond directing. The filmmaker, who debuted with cult classic ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, has since built a strong acting portfolio with films like ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ and ‘120 Bahadur’.

Farhan Akhtar has spoken candidly about how his journey shifted from behind the camera to in front of it, sharing that his work on ‘The Fakir of Venice’ and ‘Rock On!’ was what first ignited his passion for performance. The actor-filmmaker admitted that those projects opened his eyes to what acting could offer, eventually paving the way for his roles in films like ‘Luck By Chance’ and ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’.

Farhan Akhtar says early experiences made him take acting more seriously

The actor shared how a few early opportunities slowly pushed him toward acting. Even though he was already a well-known director, he said these experiences made him want to explore acting more seriously. Talking to IANS, Farhan said that working on projects like ‘The Fakir of Venice’ and ‘Rock On’ played a key role in sparking his interest in acting and encouraged him to explore it further.He shared, “It was a combination of a few things that happened together. One was a friend of mine Anand Surapur, who was directing his film The Fakir of Venice. He was very adamant that I play the lead in his film. That was the first acting experience that I had. I enjoyed that experience. Then I met Gattu (Abhishek Kapoor) and Rock On! happened. So out of the exploration of acting through those films is where I felt there is a lot of possibility to try and do more, which is why I subsequently did Luck By Chance, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, and Dil Dhadakne Do.”

For those who may not know, Farhan started out as a director, making his debut with ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, a coming-of-age film that went on to become a cult classic. He then went on to helm ‘Lakshya’, followed by the action thriller ‘Don’ and its sequel ‘Don 2’.

Farhan stepped into acting with the musical drama ‘Rock On’, a film that also won him a National Film Award for Best Hindi Film as a producer. Since then, he has built an impressive acting portfolio with films such as ‘Luck By Chance’, ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ and ‘120 Bahadur’. In the historical war drama ‘120 Bahadur’, which was set during the 1962 Sino-Indian War, Farhan portrayed the role of Param Vir Chakra awardee Major Shaitan Singh.
