Trent Boult Joins Sydney Thunder for BBL 2026-27 Season

The Sydney Thunder has signed former New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult for the entire Big Bash League (BBL) 2026-27 season. Under Andrew Flintoff as the newly appointed head coach of the team, the management believes that the arrival of Boult will help improve their bowling line-up.

Boult has signed a one-year contract with his teammate Lockie Ferguson from New Zealand and this is Boult’s return to the BBL after playing for the Melbourne Stars in the BBL 2022-23 season.

“I’m really excited to be playing in the Big Bash again and joining Lockie at Thunder. The way he gets involved is what I’m hoping to mirror and make a mark like he has – not just with the team but with the fans as well. Cricket has given me so much over the years, and I’m still at the stage where I love going out there, contributing, taking wickets, and trying to be aggressive in the powerplay,” Boult said in a Thunder release.

Trent Boult is likely to have a hectic schedule as he will compete for MI Cape Town in SA20. The BBL season of 2026-27 is set to end on January 26 while the SA20 starts on January 17. MI Cape Town will play their opening match on January 20.

Whether Boult will be available for both tournaments will depend on the performance of the Sydney Thunder. If they are knocked out during the league stage, Boult might travel to South Africa on time for MI Cape Town. On the other hand, Andrew Flintoff, the coach of MI Cape Town, seems very optimistic when it comes to signing Boult as he believes that the New Zealand player will boost the bowling attack of his team.

“Trent has an amazing reputation for being a great bloke, a team player, and a world-class performer. Having a couple Kiwis in the team who have played a lot of cricket together over the years brings a level of familiarity, and I think they complement each other really well as a right-arm and left-arm pairing. One of the things we haven’t been able to do in recent times is take wickets with the new ball, so hopefully these two can remedy that,” Flintoff said.
