Marcus Trescothick was handed the role of the side’s head coach for the three-game Pakistan series. His primary job was to oversee the side and help Joe Root, the returning England captain after Ben Stokes took a shock retirement, get the side back on track before Stephen Fleming joins the side.
Trescothick took over the team temporarily
Fleming was appointed England’s coach after Brendon McCullum was sacked following a 2-1 loss against New Zealand earlier. However, he opted to join the side after the Pakistan tour.
While Trescothick knew his role in the red-ball format was interim, he believes he will be a part of the conversation regarding the backroom staff once Fleming arrives.
“No, not really,” he said when asked if he had an idea of his Test commitments going forward. “I’ve spoken with Rob Key a little bit over the last couple of weeks and had bits of discussions on what might happen.
“I think when Stephen [Fleming]’s over and then they – Rob and Stephen and Brendon – can get together and really sort of thrash out exactly how it’s going to look, then we’ll probably be involved in those sort of conversations afterwards.
Trescothick expects clarity on his role
For now Trescothick has more pressing matters, with England set to play Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series beginning Tuesday. He will join McCullum, who remains in the white-ball set-up, along with other assistant coaches. Following this series, they will travel to Pakistan for an ODI tri-series involving Sri Lanka, along with the two teams. Trescothick expects more clarity on his Test role in a few weeks.
“Our immediate plan is obviously then looking at the Sri Lanka series we’re now straight into, with the possibility of going maybe into Pakistan. But I think within the next couple of weeks we’ll know a bit more.
“I love doing both formats. It’s been brilliant and [I’m] privileged to be in the position of being assistant coach where you’re on the road because it’s great fun and you’re with the team and you’re working with the best. There’s nothing better than working with your own national country, of course. But we’ll see. We’ll see how it pans out.”
