US President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz as the “Trump Strait”, saying the move could be considered after what he described as the United States gaining control of the strategic waterway.“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.Trump has repeatedly claimed that the United States controls the Strait of Hormuz. The White House said on August 28 that US forces had established control of the waterway, citing the clearance of Iranian mines, the movement of nearly 1,500 commercial vessels under US protection and the redirection of vessels attempting to breach the US blockade. The latest remark comes as the confrontation between Washington and Tehran has intensified. US central command said American forces completed a wave of strikes against Iranian military targets on September 1, including air-defence sites, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities and communications facilities. The United States has also maintained a naval blockade against Iranian ports. CENTCOM said in July that the blockade would target maritime traffic entering and leaving Iranian ports, while US forces would continue supporting vessels not violating the blockade. The Strait of Hormuz has emerged as a central flashpoint in the conflict because of its importance for commercial shipping and energy supplies.
