Virat Kohli has set a new record in ODI cricket by becoming the most successful run-getter against New Zealand. The Indian batsman surpassed the earlier record held by former Australian captain Ricky Ponting during the second ODI match held in Wellington. Before the match, both players had scored 1,971 runs, but Kohli scored the 1,972nd run following a glorious cover drive in the second over of the innings. After Kohli, the next three highest run-getters against New Zealand comprise Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangakkara, and Sanath Jayasuriya.
However, despite achieving the record, Kohli could only score seven runs, as he was dismissed in the fourth over. Kohli attempted to deliver successfully a cover drive but could not time the shot well. Will Young took the catch comfortably in cover point. Jacob Duffy also achieved success with the wicket of Shubman Gill who was earlier dismissed for an LBW. The match was delayed for an hour due to rain.
Anshul Kamboj performed admirably during the initial overs, picking up the wickets of Tim Seifert and Will Young. The New Zealand side failed to establish partnerships and lost wickets regularly during their innings. Gurnoor Brar was the standout bowler with four wickets while Axar Patel and Kamboj picked up two wickets each. Daryl Mitchell was the only noteworthy contributor for New Zealand, with a score of 55 that helped the team reach a total of 134 runs in the first innings. The Indian bowlers did a great job and set a manageable target.
India will turn to Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer going forward. Both batsmen did not fare well in the first ODI of the series and would be eager to rectify their mistakes.
