'We didn't even have an office, just nonstop discussions': Jason Sanjay opens up about the journey behind 'Sigma' and his admiration for Yuvan Shankar Raja

Ahead of the release of his directorial debut Sigma, Jason Sanjay has shared how the film evolved from a simple idea into a full-fledged feature with the support of Lyca Productions. The filmmaker also spoke about his admiration for composer Yuvan Shankar Raja, calling him his favourite musician and describing meeting him during the film’s recording as a memorable experience.

Jason Sanjay recalls building ‘Sigma’ with a small team

Speaking about the making of ‘Sigma’ with Behindwoods, Jason Sanjay said, “Before the story was locked, I came to Chennai and formed a small team, including my Uncle Sanju Sir. Along with members from my short film’s post-production team, we spent every day brainstorming ideas. We didn’t even have an office—just nonstop discussions that eventually shaped a strong one-line story.”He added that the team worked continuously to improve the script before approaching a production house. According to Jason Sanjay, those discussions helped them build a strong foundation for the film and gave him confidence to move ahead with his first feature as a director.

Jason Sanjay reveals emotional connect in ‘Sigma’

Jason Sanjay revealed that Lyca Productions played a key role in taking Sigma forward. “I presented it to Tamil Kumaran Sir at Lyca Productions to get his opinion on the story, budget, and execution. He loved the concept, offered valuable suggestions, and those inputs helped us complete the bound script before narrating it to him and the chairman. It’s special because Lyca’s first production was ‘Kaththi’ with my father, and now they’re producing my directorial debut, ‘Sigma,'” he said. Jason added that the support and guidance from the production house gave him the confidence to move ahead with his first feature film.

Jason Sanjay calls himself a die-hard Yuvan Shankar Raja fan

Apart from speaking about Sigma, Jason also opened up about his admiration for music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja. He said Yuvan is his favourite composer and revealed that the singer has crooned a song for ‘Sigma.’ “I first met him during the recording. At first we spoke very little, but after some time the ice was broken. I even joked with him, asking why he stays in Dubai and doesn’t come to India often. He already knew I was a huge fan. I had even clicked pictures wearing T-shirts with his photo and asked my father to send them to Yuvan. Whether I’m happy or feeling low, I always listen to his songs like ‘Arindhum Ariyamalum’ and ‘Pattiyal.’ Meeting him as a director was a special moment for me,” Jason Sanjay shared.
