Zeenat Aman reveals why she stayed in her turbulent marriage with Mazhar Khan: 'I had children, fought many battles but eventually I realised he had to help himself'

Veteran actress Zeenat Aman has often spoken candidly about the choices she made in her personal life, particularly her marriage to actor-director Mazhar Khan. The two tied the knot in 1985 and went on to have two sons, Azaan and Zahaan. Their marriage was troubled, and Aman eventually separated from Mazhar. He died in 1998 due to kidney failure. In a recent interview, the actress once again opened up on her marriage and how she was a care-taker despite the fact that it was turbulent. When asked if its true that Mazhar crazily pursued her for marriage, she said in an interview with Between Us by Anamika, “Relationships are always more complicated than the version that eventually becomes gossip. When I married Mazhar, I was ready to become a mother and I have spoken openly about that. I believed marriage was the route to building a family and I made my choice accordingly.”She further opened up on what she learnt through those times, “It taught me about the difference between love and self-abandonment. I personally stayed because I had made a commitment, because we had children and because I had hoped that things would change. Eventually, I understood that you cannot save another person by destroying yourself. I have openly spoken about having fought many of his battles but I eventually realised and recognised that he had to help himself. He’s the father of my children. I would not like to say anything derogatory about him.”Talking about what heartbreak taught her, the ‘Qurbaani’ actress said, “Success could teach you confidence but heartbreak teaches you boundaries. It teaches you that being loved is not enough if you’re not respected. Sometimes, leaving is an act of love for yourself and the people who depend on you. I think many women are taught to be accommodating. I wish I understood it earlier that discomfort is information.”When asked to advice young girls about how a healthy relationshio should be, she said “I think most women have done that. You become so good at accommodating other person that you forget yourself. A relationship should give you room to grow and not shrink you as a person. I have spoken publicly that in my marriage that there was an element of being encouraged to disconnect with the outside world. It stops you from growing as an individual and an artist. Look at how you feel when you are with that person. Do you feel safe? Can you disagree? Can you have your own ambition, friends and money? Most importantly, do you like the woman you become around that person.”In this interview, she was also asked if she’s open to love at this point. Reacting to it, she said, “I’m open to life and I have a lot of love in my life along with my children.”On work front, the actress was last seen in ‘The Royals’ and will be seen next in ‘Bun Maska’ also starring Shabana Azmi and Abhay Deol.
