Naqvi leaves Shan’s Test captaincy future to ‘cricket minds’- IPL

Naqvi leaves Shan's Test captaincy future to 'cricket minds'Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi would not have any say in Shan Masood’s future as Pakistan’s Test captain. Instead, ‘cricket minds’, which the board is recruiting for such decisions, will run such matters, according to the PCB chairman.

“We are increasing the number of cricket minds so that better results can be achieved. I want cricket minds to decide what should and should not be done.”

“We are in contact with many cricketers. When there are six or seven people instead of three, better decisions will naturally be made.”

“The decision on the Test captain will be made by the cricket minds that we are bringing together.”

Pakistan under Shan Masood

For context, there were reports that the PCB has decided to remove Shan after Pakistan’s consecutive 2-0 defeats against Bangladesh, in 2024 at home and recently away. Masood was named the side’s captain in November 2023 after Babar Azam stepped down from all-format captaincy.

Since taking over, Pakistan have won only four out of 16 Tests. That record places him among the least successful Test captains in Pakistan’s history in terms of win-loss ratio.

He also holds the joint fourth-worst record among Test captains who have led their sides in more than five matches. Additionally, he has not won a single away Test during his captaincy stint.

Final decision rests with cricket minds

Naqvi further maintained that he might offer suggestions, but the final decision will rest with the think tank, who will be given ‘all the powers’.

“I can offer suggestions, but there will be occasions when they are not followed. I have to trust them.”

“My job is to make the PCB financially stronger, while cricket should be run by cricket minds. I am giving them all the powers.”
