Muhammad Shehzad took 49 balls to reach his sixth first-class hundred, which is now the fastest by a Pakistan batter in first-class cricket. Playing for Pakistan Television (PTV) in the President’s Trophy, Shahzad came in to bat when his team was struggling at 34 for 3 against Kingsmen Academy. During his stay, he struck eight sixes and 12 fours, eventually ending with 114 off just 62 balls.
He was also able to build a 143-run stand with Muhammad Taha, who played a classic red-ball innings, scoring 43 off 72 balls, including six sweetly timed fours.
Shahzad goes past Misbah
Previously, the record for the fastest first-class hundred by a Pakistani batter was held by former captain Misbah-ul-Haq, who achieved the feat in 56 balls in a Test game against Australia in Abu Dhabi. In doing so, he levelled Viv Richards’ record of the fastest Test hundred at that time, but it would stand for two years before Brendon McCullum scored a 54-ball ton against Australia in Christchurch.
Interestingly, the next on the list after Misbah is Hasan Ali, who scored his first and only FC ton in 2021. The century came in the final game of the 2020 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, which helped his team, Central Punjab, to draw the game.
PTV haven’t had a win in the previous two rounds, having drawn both their games against State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL). Despite that, they are currently in third place, with 26 points.
