Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Tim David has been handed a one-match suspension for IPL 2027, along with a 50% match-fee fine and two demerit points, following an incident during the IPL 2026 final against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The punishment comes after David threw an ice bag in the direction of on-field umpire Nitin Menon during a tense moment in the championship clash.
The incident occurred in the first innings after a controversial decision involving Washington Sundar’s catch. On the final ball of the 10th over, Jordan Cox appeared to have taken a catch, but the third umpire, Jayaraman Madanagopal, reviewed the footage to determine whether the ball had been cleanly caught. While the review was underway, drinks were brought onto the field as players and officials awaited the verdict.
After examining the footage, the third umpire ruled in favour of Gujarat Titans and declared the catch invalid. The decision left several RCB players frustrated, including Tim David. In a moment of anger, the Australian batter threw an ice bag in the direction of umpire Nitin Menon, an action that immediately attracted the attention of match officials.
Following an investigation, David was found guilty of breaching Article 2.9 of the IPL Code of Conduct. This article relates to throwing a ball or any other piece of cricket equipment, including items such as water bottles or ice bags, at or near a player, official, umpire, match referee, or any other person in an inappropriate or potentially dangerous manner during a match.
IPL Confirms Penalty on Tim David
In an official statement, the IPL confirmed the offence and the resulting sanctions. David accepted the punishment imposed by match referee Javagal Srinath, avoiding the need for a formal hearing. The penalty included a 50% deduction from his match fee and the addition of two demerit points to his disciplinary record.
The latest breach proved costly because it was David’s third Level 1 offence of the IPL 2026 season. He had previously received one demerit point on April 12 and another two demerit points on May 10, both during matches against Mumbai Indians. These earlier incidents had already put him on the disciplinary radar heading into the final.
As a result of the latest violation, David’s demerit-point tally has now reached five points, triggering an automatic one-match suspension under IPL regulations. The ban will be served during RCB’s opening match of the IPL 2027 season, making him unavailable for the franchise’s first game of the campaign.
David’s earlier offences also stemmed from disciplinary issues. In the first incident, he was penalized for failing to comply with an umpire’s instruction during a match. The second offence saw him fined 30% of his match fee and handed additional demerit points after making an obscene gesture following a game. With the latest incident adding to his record, the IPL has taken strict action to reinforce its code of conduct and maintain discipline on the field.
